SIGONELLA, Italy – The Sigonella Middle High School Foundations of Fitness class participated in a range of activities this school year to enhance their fitness levels, with the Mount Etna excursion standing out as a highlight. Students traveled by bus to Rifugio Sapienza, where they hiked the Silvestri Crater, formed during an 1892 eruption that produced lava fountains reaching up to 1,300 feet. At an elevation exceeding 6,200 feet, the hike was physically demanding, but it rewarded students with panoramic views of southern Sicily and the surrounding coastline.

Following lunch at Rifugio Sapienza, students visited a nearby ropes course operated by EtnaAdventura. After completing a safety briefing, they progressed from introductory obstacles to more advanced challenges as their confidence grew. Activities included traversing, swinging, and balancing on elevated courses 20–30 feet above the ground along the slopes of Mount Etna.  The students could also ride the down the zip line that ran the length of the entire facility.

The day concluded with students returning to school tired but accomplished after a memorable and enriching experience.
