CATANIA, Italy — Video Communications and Italian language students from Sigonella Middle High School witnessed a once-in-a-generation moment as they attended the 2026 Winter Olympics Torch Relay in Catania’s historic Piazza Duomo, gaining a front-row view of the Olympic Flame as it arrived in the heart of the city.
As part of an experiential learning opportunity, students reported on location, documenting the celebration and practicing real-world journalism and language skills in an authentic setting. Surrounded by local residents, visitors, and officials, the students observed the relay’s arrival and the vibrant citywide festivities that followed, capturing the atmosphere, sights, and sounds of the international event.
Working as student journalists, Sigonella students conducted first-hand interviews with classmates, gathering personal reflections on what it was like to see the Olympic Flame up close and take part in the citywide celebration. Students described the excitement of the crowd, the symbolism of the torch, and the pride of witnessing an event that connects communities around the world through sport and shared traditions.
The experience brought together communications, language immersion, and cultural studies in a real-world educational setting. Italian language students engaged directly with the local culture and environment, while Video Communications students applied filming, interviewing, and storytelling techniques in a fast-paced, on-location reporting experience.
